IT Risks and Controls: A Primer equips learners with foundational knowledge of IT risk management and control frameworks. Participants will explore key IT risks, effective assessment techniques, and strategies to implement preventive, detective, and corrective controls. By understanding stakeholder roles, governance frameworks like NIST and COBIT, and real-world case studies, learners will develop the skills to identify, assess, and mitigate IT risks effectively.

Learning Objectives
  • Recognize IT risks and classify them into operational, strategic, compliance, and financial categories.
  • Identify and implement IT control types (preventive, detective, corrective, and directive) to manage risks effectively.
  • Discover the fundamental components of IT control frameworks such as COBIT, ISO/IEC 27001, and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to ensure IT governance and compliance.

    Doug has over 40 years of experience in IT Audit, Security, Compliance, and Risk Management in a variety of industries.  He is currently an Instructor in Webster University’s nationally recognized Cybersecurity program.  Doug holds an MBA from Saint Louis University, and is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA).  He served on the Board of Directors of CyberUp, A St. Louis-based nonprofit organization that focuses on cybersecurity apprenticeships and youth education programs.  Doug was also on the Executive Committee of GHECC, the Gateway Higher Education Cybersecurity Consortium.  He is a published author in books and professional journals, and is an experienced speak...
